The City of Bedford has
received over $2.6 million from the Indiana Department of Transportation for
the Downtown Square streetscape project as part of the Indiana Stellar
Community initiative and the Community Crossing Grant for road related
improvements on Lincoln Avenue. When bids for the combined Stellar Community streetscape
and trail project exceeded estimates the two projects were separated and the
streetscape project was given priority. Construction
on the Downtown Square streetscape will begin this month. Planning for the project has included public
meetings with input from downtown merchants regarding ways to make the downtown
more business friendly. In January,
during two public meetings, representatives from the Lochmueller Group shared
final renderings for the project and answered questions posed by citizens, government
officials, and business owners.
Community Crossing Grant
funds were designated by the Indiana State Legislature last year for road
related projects. These funds will allow
the City of Bedford to implement improvements on Lincoln Avenue that address
concerns of residents and business owners concerning traffic problems and
condition of the roadway. The project
will include a roundabout, street grinding and paving, as well as new sidewalks. Property has been acquired for this project
on the southwest corner of John Williams Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue and the
building on the property is being removed and relocated by the Bedford Parks
Department for storage.
Both projects are being planned
with as few disruptions to citizens and businesses as possible. While this is the case, during construction
there are often times of inconvenience and disappointment. At the pre-construction meeting this week
contractors informed city officials that existing trees on the Downtown Square must
be removed before construction begins.
It is anticipated that the trees on the Downtown Square will be removed
the week of March 11th. In
addition, trees on the 1200 block of Lincoln Avenue will be removed during the
month of March so the existing broken and hazardous sidewalks can be replaced
as part of the Lincoln Avenue project. Both
projects have been reviewed by the City of Bedford Tree Board, which guarantees
that each tree will be replaced three to one as a 25 year member of Tree City
USA. Although new trees will be planted
downtown as shown in the project drawings and on the 1200 block of Lincoln
Avenue it is not without emotion that this necessary step is being taken.
City of Bedford staff and
contractors are working to address the concerns of citizens and local
businesses and will continue to do so throughout the 2017 construction season but
remind everyone that this work requires commitment, patience, and understanding
but in the end the results will be worth it.
Together we are Building a Better Bedford.
